Removing the Mercury
Due to the results from the Kelmer test I was advised to take 500mg of Selenium daily along with iodine and vitamin C. On seeing my own doctor, I was advised to omit iodine as this could affect the thyroid gland. From researching online I came across an American doctor who treated mercury toxic patients, Dr. Hyman, whose informative site gave a good explanation of how to prepare for detoxification and an outline of what chelation may involve during the detox period. In the preparation phase I did everything as advised. I ate as healthy as possible and started taking selenium and vitamin C. I felt selenium made me nauseous at first and so I split the dose taking 100 mg on rising and 400mg at lunch time (this later proved to be an error as recorded in the recovery blog.) I added zinc and garlic further down the line to the100mg dose of selenium. I attempted to support my liver for the detox by taking amino acids, folate, B6 and B12 and started eating sulphur foods at every meal if possible.
Initially the symptoms that flared up due to the Kelmer test settled down. My joints were easier three weeks later by following this regime. No futher palpitations had occured and mild chest pain had gradually eased. I was sleeping better and the sensitivity I had been experiencing in my teeth stopped and so far has not returned. The itchy ears continued but there were occasional days were they would be less troublesome. From the fourth week, nausea that I originally connected to selenium started to return and as the weeks progressed I started to feel quite unwell being nauseous throughout most days. One morning I got up and both my hands felt numb. On one occasion I could not get out of bed on waking as again the dizziness was so severe it was as if the room was moving. I later discovered this was mainly due to the sulphur foods. More information on the thiol connection to certain foods can be found through the living network site on the resource page.
I unfortunately met with a challenge when I went to the dental practice I was attending. While some dentists still take the view that amalgam is safe, they have still been supportive in assisting any patient who wishes amalgam removed. The dentist agreed to do the work, but basically explained that the reason I was having a problem with the tooth that was troubling me was because of my bite, clenching and sensitive teeth. As I've mentioned sensitive teeth can in fact be a symptom of mercury toxicity as can clenching of teeth. This dentist was also supportive of amalgam use and so felt the dental work would make my teeth look better but would not help my health one bit. Over the following weeks I had to think this through due to the severity of symptoms, and of course I'm referring to the dementia. I also came across an increasing amount of information that said safe removal was imperative and at that point I contacted Lyn Rennick for advice. Lyn advised me on the importance of seeing a mercury free dentist. I eventually made the decision to do this as the dementia symptoms experienced made me aware I had to put my health into the care of someone who was up to date on what amalgam can do. This also proved fortunate for my dental symptoms, because what had previously been put down to my bite, was apparently due to other factors and I'm happy to say has gradually been rectified. So don't be afraid to seek a second opinion - or a third.
I had sussed out for myself that my severe symptoms after the Kelmer test occurred, because I had pulled the mercury with a chelating agent and subsequently reabsorbed it over the following days. The mercury free dentist explained this is what had happened and that the severity of reaction would depend on how toxic a person was or how sensitive to mercury they may be. He also explained that I was feeling so unwell, because I was sticking to the chelation protocol. To explain, chelation is the recognised protocol that is widely used, however, having used that method for patients over the years, this dentist had a number of patients whom it made ill. The reason again being dependent on how sensitive to mercury the person was or the level of mercury toxicity in their body. While this is true, I discovered in April 2014 that teh chelation protocol advised by Andrew Cutler was very manageable and consequently the blog will be amended. He went on to tell me that from my symptoms, mercury was active in my joints, heart and brain. If I continued to mobilize the mercury and I was unable to excrete it all, it would settle into other organs rather that settle in areas where it was already active. This would produce further symptoms perhaps coughing bouts or asthma for example. I had started to experience coughing bouts for the two weeks prior to the dental appointment.
At that point I stayed on the selenium, zinc and vitamin C and cut back on sulphur foods. It all became a bit overwhelming and I decided to stop the other supplements I was taking for a bit. It took about two weeks for the nausea to settle and I'm happy to say the coughing bouts subsided. My joints initially worsened as the mercury was not being mobilized to the same extent. The dentist explained he now used Field Control Therapy as the method of treatment to remove mercury, because chelation made some clients ill. I was considered too ill at that point to consider amalgam removal and the plan was to start with FCT to increase my well being and look at removing amalgam when my health improved. A few weeks later I had my first appointment for FCT and tested positive for a chronic level of toxicity.
People who have been through this will advise that it can be costly and so it can. It is a request to get the amalgam removed and not a dental health issue, so even if you have dental insurance, it's unlikely to be covered. There is also the cost of supplements and any treatment you may need whether you opt for chelation or Field Control Therapy. Should you discover amalgam is playing a part in your health problems, only you can decide the worth in getting well. For me the dementia symptoms are the one reason that meant treatment was worthwhile. However, I have to say I now realize this has affected a great deal of my life both emotionally and physically and I'm looking forward to knowing what it feels like just to be well.
